A Totally Automatic System
The Standard Conformatic® blade holder senses variations in the roll surface and automatically adjusts itself to maintain uniform contact between blade and roll. This compensating action results in highly efficient roll cleaning and sheet removal. The flexible, sealed tube within the Standard Conformatic blade holder contains a predetermined volume of fluid. As the blade tip is loaded against the roll, pressure develops in the tube causing the rear edge of the blade to float on the tube. If application changes occur and contact becomes uneven, the fluid compensates, causing the blade tip to conform to the roll at all points simultaneously. This unique system requires no external connections; the hydraulic tube is sealed and self-contained.
Accurate Adjustment
Micro-adjusting screws located in the holder facilitate a closer initial blade fit resulting in greater overall precision. The holder can compensate for relatively large roll surface variations, allowing up to 3/16 inch movement at the blade tip.
Rapid Blade Changing
The Standard Conformatic holder's design facilitates rapid blade changing. Because the holder is initially profiled to the roll surface and the tube compensates for minor variations, adjustments during blade changes are not necessary. Replacing KF-3 and KF-10 holders with Standard Conformatic holders is an easy operation; no major rework is required. Filler strips are avail-able, and simple retrofit instructions are packed with each Standard Conformatic holder. Buffer strips are provided to protect the tube and are held in place by screws at intervals of 36 inches along the blade holder.
Reduced Loading Pressure
The sensitive response of the Standard Conformatic holder permits a good blade fit with less pressure applied to the roll, resulting in reduced blade wear and extended roll life.This is important in calendering and other critical applications where a uniform fit with minimum pressure is required in order to avoid generating hot spots or wear on the ends of the roll.
Recommended Applications
The Standard Conformatic is recommended in all applications where temperature variation in the doctor or roll may cause an uneven blade fit, and in applications such as calendering where a high-precision blade fit and gentle blade pressure are important.
- On all dryer rolls, to compensate for changes that occur when the roll is heated.
- On last dryers and sweat dryers, where there may be temperature variation across the doctor back: warm near the dryer roll, cool away from it.
- On all wide-faced wire rolls, where wire tension may adversely affect blade fit across the roll face.
- On calender rolls, where high-precision blade fit and gentle blade pressure are critical.
- 'On press rolls, where crown changes are common and loading pressures are significant.
Wet and Dry Applications
The Standard Conformatic holder is manufactured in mild steel for use in dry applications and in 316 stainless for wet applications. It can also be produced in a sealed unit for use on top presses with ponds.
