New Design for Greater Efficiency

The Kadant Web Systems Sta-Clean holder is designed as a direct replacement for finger-type DST holders. By providing flexibility in cross-machine direction, rigidity in machine direction, uniform blade-to-roll contact, and a low rate of blade consumption, the Sta-Clean holder is ideal for a variety of paper machine roll positions. In addition, the holder's fingerless design allows for quick changes of pneumatic tubes and helps keep dirt and debris from getting trapped in the holder. Pneumatic pressure provides balanced blade pressure across the roll face at all times during operation. By balancing this pressure and assuring a precise blade-to-roll fit, the Sta-Clean holder lengthens the life of doctor blades and, therefore, reduces the downtime necessary for blade and roll maintenance. To maintain optimum doctoring during changes in rubber apron provides added protection! Improved doctoring efficiency reduces downtime and enhances machine performance machine operating conditions, loading pressures can be adjusted through the pressure-regulating panel. As an added benefit, air loading cylinders are an available option to open the doctor from the roll.

Holder Construction

Kadant Web Systems Sta-Clean holders are constructed of stainless steel and are built to perform dependably even under the most difficult conditions. They are designed to operate effectively in a range of applications, including: breast rolls, press rolls, breaker stack rolls, first and last dryers, sweat dryers, bottom, intermediate and top calender rolls, and reel drums. Depending on the application, the holder will be fitted with either a stainless steel loading plate or one that's made of unidirectional carbon fibers reinforced with high-temperature glass resins. The holder can also be fitted with an optional rubber sealing apron—tied between the finger tip and durable tube tray—to prevent the entrance of dirt.

Precision Blade Pressure Control

The Sta-Clean holder applies uniform linear pressure across the blade, effectively holding it against the roll surface. The doctor blade is inserted into finger tips mounted on a flexible stainless steel or synthetic top plate. The top plate is supported by pivot rod brackets—secured on two-inch centers across the width of the doctor—which rotate on a pivot rod. Two pneumatic pressure tubes run the full length of the holder: the load tube which provides precise, uniform and adjustable control to the blade; and the unload tube that lifts the holder for blade changing. Both tubes rest directly against the top plate. During operation, pneumatic pressure is applied to the loading tube. This, in turn, exerts force to the underside of the top plate and transfers pressure to the blade tip. With the inherent flexibility of the top plate in the cross-machine direction, the loading pressure is distributed evenly across the doctor blade which conforms exactly with the roll surface. Rigidity of the holder is maintained in machine direction. This results in greatly improved doctoring over conventional holders, particularly where the surface to be doctored may be irregular or subject to variable crowns. To lift the blade from the roll, pneumatic pressure is released from the loading tube and applied to the unloading tube, pivoting the top plate assembly away from the roll face.

The Smart Sta-Clean Doctor

Provision for monitoring blade load (PLI) is provided by fitting load cells under the base of the turnbuckles or air cylinders. A separate instrument panel will show a digital readout of blade loading.

Pneumatic Circuitry

The pneumatic circuitry for operating Sta-Clean holders directs filtered mill air through a four-way valve and provides regulated air to the rear tube to load the blade to the roll. By turning the valve, air is directed to the front unloading tube. A control panel, which can be supplied separately, incorporates a special setup feature to simplify and reduce installation time. When the air is directed to the load tube, a second valve (located inside the panel) directs air simultaneously to the unload tube. This ensures that the holder top plate is parallel during setup and alignment.
